National
Assembly Extraordinary Session Held Today
Friday 3rd April, 2009
The
National Assembly today convened in an extraordinary session to consider
a joint Motion brought by the Leader of Government business, Hon.
Marie-Louise Potter and the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Wavel
Ramkalawan to express its support for the measures being undertaken by
the government to curb piracy in our waters.
The National Assembly strongly condemned the Somali pirates who recently
hijacked two Seychelles flagged ships and held hostage their ten crew
members.
The Assembly further deplored the flagrant violation of our territorial
integrity and sovereignty. Recognizing that piracy greatly affects our
two main industries which are the fisheries and tourism, the Assembly
unconditionally backed all measures (local and international) being
taken by the government to put an end to this sad state of affairs.
The Assembly concluded by extending its support to all families and
friends of the victims and prayed that all Seychellois hostages will be
released soon.
Earlier in his communication, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr.
Patrick Herminie conveyed his sympathy to all the families and friends
of the hostages and extorted the government to gather all our resources
to fight the scorch which is not only threatening to our fishermen, but
the very sovereignty of our country.
The Assembly was unanimous in its decision.
